1975 Triumph Spitfire
This is the way the car looked when we bought it in 1996 but looks can be deceiving. We thought the car was in excellent shape and cosmetically it was but the mechanical problems started within the first year. We have most of them solved now but in 1999 I had to replace the frame as I discovered while doing some suspension work that the rear of the frame had rotted. Despite the problems there is still nothing to compare with driving on a winding road with the top down on a warm summer day.

However for those cooler fall days we have the factory steel top. Also I think it changes the style of the car since it is painted to match the car and doesn't look like a bolt-on afterthought. The wheels are ROH from Australia and they are 14 X 5. In spite of the larger than stock size I have had no clearance problems with them and the car feels solid on the road.

What started out as a minor job installing the map light you see in the passenger side glove box became a major problem when I discovered that the wiring had been altered at some time and several of the wires had melted together in the harness. We resolved these problems by installing a new wiring harness and cleaning up all the wiring that wasn't replaced. As to the maplight it does finally work and because it is a fairly rare item I consider myself lucky to have found it in the first place.

The engine has been left in stock condition except for the removal of the air pump and the associated plumbing. The electronic ignition was also replaced with the older but more reliable points system. The intake and exhaust manifolds are stock but the exhaust system has been changed to a Monza system with a resonator. This gives a nice tone without being too loud and I like the looks of the four chrome tips exiting the rear. The front air deflectors were custom made for me from aluminium by a very good friend in the sheet metal business. There is an auxiliary electric fan in front of the radiator set to come on at 165 F to aid cooling on a hot summer day.
